Not at all. It's just not all there is to it. Otherwise, Mike Leach wouldn't have had any trouble. Excellent with X's and O's, bad with students.

IMHO that is why Tom Turner was so great. Same basic offense year to year, could get kids to run through walls for him. Great play caller, don't get me wrong, excellent with X's and O's, but dang if he couldn't get kids to do what they "can't" do.

    Re: pound coach resigned

I actually think Crabree could have been a good coach in time but lacked in experience. It takes a nice mixture to succeed, and in a place like Pound, too many landmines. Not only did I think he was lacking in experience himself, but there wasn't a lot of experience on the staff. Joedirt said something about getting kids to run through a wall, but the kids have to also feel confidence in the coach to do that. That doesn't happen when there is problems adjusting or fixing problems. Kids are smart sometimes. They realize when they are facing an uphill battle before the battle even begins. If you feel you have a coaching staff that is going to put you in a position to win, you have faith, if you don't, faith goes quick.

I've said it before and will say it again, Crabtree probably would have been fine if he assisted some, got his feet wet and jumped in. Now jumped into Pound, thats a dangerous location for anybody, and he probably is too nice to have made it there.
What we've got here is failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach, so you get what we had here last week which is the way he wants it. Well, he gets it.

    Re: pound coach resigned

So that it is clear that I am not just bashing Crabtree I DO think that there were some things that he did very well mainly reguarding off season workouts and at least at Ervington getting the kids out of the "I just hope we do better than 1-9" mode and beliving that they were as good as anyone on there schedule.

At Pound he got there O-Line to drop a ton of weight to get into better football shape (And they were better this season than they were last year)

Rockterr is also probably correct in that alot of Pounds trouble was haveing a weak staff overall....(Back in 99? when Pound played in a state game Rocky Baker was the head man but Rick Mullins and Jason Mullins were both on the staff and that makes a preatty dang solid group)

IMHO after the consoladation if he wants to continue coaching I think Crabtree would do well as an assestant coach at the Wise/Pound school

Well since I really don't care who knows if its me on here or not anymore AND since you have your little "confirmation" thread going in your "private" group, I will lay it all out.

I'm not resigning because of the parents at Pound. Although the challenges are certainly there, it's no worse than dealing with the inmates that corrections officers deal with everyday (of whom I have the utmost respect for having done that job for two years)
and it comes with the territory. I do think it has been a problem for many years and the testimony to that lies in the sheer turnover of coaches there.

I'm not resigning because I think we will be bad this coming season. I actually believe that, if someone is hired very quickly and continues the weightlifting program currently in place, 6 or 7 wins next year is not an impossibility. Although there will only be one senior on the team, he is a pretty good one to have (Balthis). And according to my research, he is very close to breaking at least 5 school records offensively next year. Barring any more transfers, the sophomores and juniors that are left are very talented, albeit young.

THE number one main reason I am resigning is simply this: my son will be 8 years old this year and it will be his first year of crunch bunch football. I promised myself that I would be there for him throughout his athletics, whether it be in a coaching capacity or just to cart him around.

Although I deeply love football and coaching varsity athletics, I am going to keep my promise to myself and my son. I have already missed so many other things that he has been involved in and I would never be able to forgive myself if I broke my promise, though it pains me so.

IF I do ANY assisting at all in the future, it will be for whatever team he is on, and in whatever capacity the head coach of that team will allow. I won't be coaching any varsity football again until my son is in 8th grade, if at all.

I have no "bad taste" about coaching high school football. I have no regrets either.

And finally, just for the record, I had originally planned to help Rick Mullins when I was teaching at Clintwood Elementary in 2003-2004, and you can ask him about that for "confirmation". I was offered the Ervinton job because "nobody else would take it". I knew I wasn't quite ready, but come on, if you were offered the position of head coach right of the bat, you would take it too.

As far as Pound is concerned, when I came back from Texas, I was originally hired to teach 6th grade math and be Mark Palmer's assistant at St. Paul. I had NO INTENTIONS of being a head coach again. However, Dr. Killough asked me to do it as a favor because of reasons discussed on here before, of which consisted mainly of a combination of lack of qualifications and/or desire of anyone else to take the job. I could not say no.

There you go. I don't care, really, what people may think about my coaching. It is what it is. What I do care about is that people are truthful about things. I have never claimed to be a good coach. But I haven't backed down from the challenge either.
